“The sooner that you start speaking about your hair loss, the easier it is to own it — the easier it is to walk through a door and shine and say, ‘This is me!’ You don’t hide in fear. I was afraid to even talk about hair. Nobody should live like that.”
Ashlee’s hair loss journey began when doctors diagnosed her with alopecia universalis at just six years old. She shares, “...I just remember feeling like there was no one else that looked like me. I was the only one in school that had no hair.” As a preteen, Ashlee’s hair returned, but she lived in constant fear of losing it again.
In her second year of college, Ashlee’s worst nightmare came true, and her hair began to thin and fall out as did her eyebrows and eyelashes. Trying to navigate studies, relationships, and newfound independence alongside hair loss was extremely overwhelming. She remembers feeling as if she’d lost her entire identity, but she kept silent, in shame. For the first time in her life, Ashlee decided to wear a wig. In an effort to feel like herself again, she quickly upgraded her inexpensive synthetic wig to a high-end hair replacement system she found in New York City — but she knew she couldn’t justify the hefty costs for long. Then, she found HairDirect.
“I realized what kind of quality I could get at an amazing cost,” says Ashlee, “With HairDirect, I really feel like they understand me and my needs. I feel like they’re very empathetic, and they really want to make me happy.” Today, Ashlee wears a custom hair system and enhances her facial features with temporary eyebrow tattoos and false eyelashes. The confidence she has gained has helped to transform her outlook on alopecia. She now serves on the board of the Children’s Alopecia Project, and no longer views her hair loss as a shameful secret. She shares, “The sooner that you start speaking about your hair loss, the easier it is to own it — the easier it is to walk through a door and shine and say, ‘This is me!’ You don’t hide in fear. I was afraid to even talk about hair. Nobody should live like that.”
From now on, Ashlee refuses to let hair loss steal her sense of identity and joy in life. With a smile, she proclaims, “I refuse to lose myself, my passion.”
“With HairDirect, I really feel like they understand me and my needs. I feel like they’re very empathetic, and they really want to make me happy.”
After a lifetime of hiding her alopecia and hair loss in shame, Ashlee is boldly sharing her story with others in hopes of providing encouragement and hope. She says, “It took a lot of tears. It took a lot of bravery. It’s very hard to be vulnerable and speak about something you never wanted to speak about — but it’s also extremely empowering. If I can just touch just one person’s life, it makes me feel like I’m on top of the world.”
